Creating a Full Moon Ritual

A full moon in a blue sky over pink mountains.

There is an unmistakable magic about a full moon. Scientists and storytellers alike have been obsessed with it for centuries. The man in the moon, the space race to conquer her, the tides being controlled by the moon, howling wolves… The list goes on. But what if I told you you can partake in her power by creating your own full moon ritual.

Nothing makes me feel so tiny and yet so infinite as a night’s sky full of glittering stars. I try to take it in as often as I can; the view is especially breath-taking when I go up north in the summers, far away from all the light pollution and city noise. When I settle in and get really connected the very sky seems to be in communion with me. It sends messages:

“You are not alone.”

“There is something bigger.”

“Your small worries won’t matter in the end, when we are all infinite.”

I’ve burst into spontaneous tears more than a couple times. It’s powerful. And it’s a powerful time for ritual.

Magical Properties of a Full Moon Ritual

The moon works in cycles, just like us. The two most visible stages of the moon, and the ones that I have found to be the most magical, are the new moon and the full moon. I’ll write more about the new moon in a different post, but as of today we just had the flower full moon in the sign Scorpio.

The full moon phase is the end of the cycle. It is a time of gratitude and reflection. It is not the time to begin new pursuits, but rather to reflect and give thanks for the blessings and lessons the last cycle brought to you.

The Moon Cycle lasts 29 1/2 days.

Now that you know where the full moon phase sits in the moon cycle, let’s talk about your full moon ritual.

Your Full Moon Ritual

Please draw inspiration from these ideas, but go inward and follow your intuition while devising your own personal full moon ritual.

Cleansing for Full Moon Ritual

Smoke cleanse yourself and your surroundings. You can burn bundles of sage, rosemary, or lavender. I like to do this with any type of ritual to cleanse the energy around me. In this case after I neutralize my space I can welcome in the energy of the full moon.

Gratitude Journalling

Choose a notebook to be your full moon Gratitude Journal. Look back at the past month of your life and write down all that you are thankful for -be it a blessing or a lesson. Giving thanks let’s the Universe know you’re grateful and you want more of these blessings in the future.

Full Moon Candle Magick

Burning candles adds a beautiful touch to any ritual. The default colours use are pink (for manifestation) and white (for gratitude). Another tip for colour choices is to look up what colour represents the astrological sign the moon in is, for example Scorpio = red or black.

Support your Ritual with Astrology

The moon is the planet that governs our emotions, so we will be feeling in tune with whatever sign she is in. In the example of Scorpio, the sign of passion, mystery, and assertiveness, we will feel these qualities in our own lives. Research the sign that each full moon is in and journal on those themes within your on life. For the Scorpio example, it’s a good time to think about what you’re grateful for in your passions, ask for what you want by being assertive, and think about where you might have fun with a bit of mystery in your life.

Use Your Full Moon Ritual to Charge your Crystals

Did you know crystals can be cleansed and charged just by the energy of the full moon? Simply set them outside or on a windowsill in the light of the moon and your will feel a powerful energy in them by morning.

Thank the Moon Herself

Look back to your gratitude journalling. When you look at that list you might see reoccuring themes of things you are especially thankful to have in your life and you may want more of. If you feel called, I recommend writing those wishes and thank-yous out clearly on slips of paper to “give” to the moon. Make sure you write it as a thank you (as if you already have it even if you may not) and not as a list of things you expect to receive. Then place these thank you notes for the moon together in a crystal bowl (or whatever you have to use) outside under the light so your gratitude is absorbed by the universe.

Full Moon Ritual Bath

Anyone who knows me knows I don’t need an excuse to take a bath. I think they are a great time to reflect and meditate. And as the moon governs all water here on earth it’s a perfect time for a soak. Close your eyes and really reflect on what you have learned and how you have grown in the last cycle.

You may also want to infuse your bath with herbs that correlate with the sign of the moon. To infuse a bath with herbs all you do is take the dry herbs of your choice and place them in either a cotton sachet to steep in the bath like tea -or you can use a bath infuser (I was gifted one from the body shop) or disposable tea bags which you can get here in Canada at David’s Tea. I find that smelling the herbs helps me to relax and meditate and feel connected and grounded.
